It happened twice, within the same year. Two encounters with the same architect’s work, and both times, the same physical reaction: silence. Not the absence of sound, but the kind of silence that takes hold of your body when something true appears.

The first time, it was the Bourse de Commerce in Paris. I walked into that 18th-century rotunda, beneath the restored frescoes and the immense glass dome, and there it was: a cylinder of raw concrete, nine metres tall, twenty-nine metres wide, standing in the centre of the building like an act of quiet defiance. No ornament. No apology. Just this perfect, massive circle of béton brut, inserted into four centuries of Parisian architectural history as if it had always belonged there. The contrast should have felt violent. It felt right.

The second time, it was the Conference Pavilion on the Vitra Campus, in Weil am Rhein. I was on a guided tour, surrounded by the exuberant signatures of Gehry, Hadid, and Herzog & de Meuron. And then we reached a building that didn’t shout. Concrete walls so smooth they seemed almost tender.

Both buildings carry the signature of the same man: Tadao Ando. And both, in their radically different ways, confirmed what I have long believed: concrete is not a cold material. It is for me one of the most expressive, most emotional materials in architecture.

I had already explored this conviction in my article on Rudy Ricciotti, whose béton is Mediterranean, muscular. Ando’s concrete is something else entirely. It catches light. Two visions, two temperaments, but the same fundamental refusal to see concrete as merely functional, merely grey, merely brutal.

The Boxer Who Became an Architect

Tadao Ando was born in Osaka in 1941. He grew up in a working-class neighbourhood, raised by his grandmother. He never attended architecture school. He never had a mentor, a master, or an institutional pathway. What he had was a fierce, almost ferocious curiosity - and, before architecture, a career as a professional boxer.

The boxing detail is not anecdotal. It tells you everything about the man: discipline, solitude, physical intelligence, the willingness to take hits and keep standing. These are not metaphors. They are the foundations of an architectural practice that has, for over fifty years, refused every shortcut.

In the early 1960s, Ando discovered a book by Le Corbusier in a second-hand bookshop in Osaka. He was so struck by the drawings that he traced them obsessively, trying to understand how spaces could be conceived through lines on paper. He couldn’t afford architecture school, so he did what few would dare: he taught himself. He read. He studied. And then, between 1962 and 1969, he travelled through Japan, Europe, Africa, the United States, and Asia, visiting buildings the way others visit temples.

In 1969, he returned to Osaka and founded Tadao Ando Architect & Associates. He was twenty-eight years old. He had no degree, no connections, no clients. He had something better: a vision so clear it would take the world decades to fully understand it.

Concrete as a Language of the Soul

To understand Ando, you must understand his relationship with concrete. It is not a stylistic choice. It is not an aesthetic preference. It is a philosophy.

Ando’s concrete - his famous fair-faced reinforced concrete - is poured into wooden formwork panels designed to the exact dimensions of a traditional Japanese tatami mat. Each panel bears six anchor holes where the bolts hold the shuttering together. When the formwork is removed, the concrete surface retains these marks: the grid of the panels, the small circles of the bolt holes, arranged with mathematical precision across the wall. Most architects would fill these holes, smooth the surface, cover the evidence of construction. Ando leaves them visible. They become his signature, a declaration that the process of making is as beautiful as the finished object.

The wood used for his formwork is specially varnished, which gives the concrete an extraordinary quality when it sets: smooth, almost silken to the touch, with a luminous warmth that changes throughout the day as light moves across its surface. People who have never touched an Ando wall imagine concrete as rough and cold. Those who have describe something closer to stone that has been polished by centuries of water.

Where Light Enters

Ando’s earliest masterpiece is tiny. The Row House in Sumiyoshi, completed in 1976 in a dense Osaka neighbourhood, is barely more than a narrow concrete box inserted between two traditional wooden houses. Its radical gesture: an open courtyard at its centre, exposed to rain and sky, that forces the inhabitants to walk outside to move between rooms. Architecture critics were scandalised. A house where you need an umbrella to go from the bedroom to the bathroom? Ando’s response was characteristically blunt: he was not interested in convenience. He was interested in making people feel the weather, the seasons, the passage of time, every single day.

This conviction that architecture must reconnect humans to the elemental reaches its most transcendent expression in the Church of the Light, completed in 1989 in Ibaraki, a suburb of Osaka. A small, austere concrete box. No decoration. No colour. And in the wall behind the altar, a cruciform slot cut clean through the concrete, from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. Through this opening, daylight pours in, not as gentle illumination but as a blade of light that carves the darkness. The cross is not painted, not sculpted, not gilded. It is absence. It is void. It is pure light defining pure form.

Ando once said: “I do not believe architecture has to speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise of sunlight and wind speak.”

This is the core of his philosophy: architecture as a frame for the invisible. Concrete as the vessel. Light and silence as the true materials.

Naoshima: An Island Transformed

If one project encapsulates Ando’s vision at its most ambitious, it is Naoshima, a small island in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea that, over thirty-seven years, he has transformed into one of the world’s most extraordinary art destinations.

It began in the late 1980s with the Benesse House Museum, a building that is simultaneously a museum and a hotel, where guests sleep among the artworks. Then came the Chichu Art Museum, completed in 2004 — a structure built almost entirely underground, invisible from the surface, its galleries illuminated solely by natural light channelled through geometric openings in the earth. The museum houses just three artists — Claude Monet, Walter De Maria, and James Turrell — in spaces so precisely calibrated to each work that architecture and art become indistinguishable.

In 2025, the Naoshima New Museum of Art opened, adding another chapter to this ongoing dialogue between island, art, and concrete. For Ando, Naoshima is not a project. It is a life’s work — proof that architecture can transform not just a building but an entire landscape, an entire community, an entire way of seeing.

The Bourse de Commerce: A Conversation Across Centuries

When François Pinault chose Ando to transform the Bourse de Commerce into a museum for his contemporary art collection, he was asking for something nearly impossible: to insert a radically modern intervention into one of Paris’s most historically layered buildings - a structure that carries the memory of Catherine de Médicis’s 16th-century column, an 18th-century circular grain hall, a 19th-century iron and glass dome, and elaborate painted murals depicting France’s commercial empire.

Ando’s answer was the cylinder. A circle of cast-in-place concrete, twenty-nine metres wide and nine metres tall, placed at the exact centre of the rotunda, beneath the dome. No structural connection to the existing walls. No disruption of the historical surfaces. Just this massive, serene presence — like a thought materialised in space.

For Ando, the circle holds a specific meaning rooted in Japanese philosophy: it represents both mu (nothingness, the void) and the whole. In the Bourse, this duality is palpable. The cylinder simultaneously empties the space and completes it. It creates a new interior - contemplative, focused, modern - while honouring everything that surrounds it: the murals above, the dome beyond, four centuries of Parisian history radiating outward.

Concrete staircases spiral around the cylinder’s exterior like a thin peel of fruit, rising from the basement to the upper galleries, offering changing perspectives on the building’s layers as you ascend. The Bouroullec brothers designed the luminaires. Michel and Sébastien Bras conceived the restaurant. But the emotional anchor is Ando’s circle: still, silent, absolute.

Still Building, Still Drawing

At eighty-four, Tadao Ando shows no sign of slowing down. In 2025, he unveiled the design for the Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA), a curved concrete form inspired by the pearl, set to rise on the waters of Dubai Creek. In Tashkent, his National Museum of Uzbekistan is under construction, with an opening planned for 2028. In South Korea, he collaborated with sculptor Antony Gormley on a twenty-five-metre subterranean concrete dome at Museum SAN - a space where visitors descend into the earth to encounter both art and architecture through a single oculus of light.

The major retrospective exhibition Youth, held at the VS. venue in Grand Green Osaka from March 2025, gathered approximately sixty architectural projects and over two hundred and thirty works - sketches, models, and immersive installations, including a life-size recreation of the Church on the Water. The exhibition’s title is characteristically provocative: at eighty-four, Ando insists that youth is not an age but an attitude - a refusal to stop questioning, learning, fighting.

And then there is the book. Published by Taschen in November 2025, Tadao Ando: Sketches, Drawings, and Architecture is a 594-page volume gathering over 750 sketches, models, and technical plans spanning five decades. It reveals the intimate, obsessive process behind the architecture: the quick pencil lines, the colour studies, the plans that evolve from instinct to precision. In his foreword, Ando writes with characteristic directness that he does not trust digital media, that the hand-drawn line carries a vitality that no computer can replicate, and that he will continue to draw by hand “to the very end.”

There is something profoundly moving about this: one of the world’s greatest living architects, a man who has built on four continents, who has won the Pritzker Prize (1995), the RIBA Royal Gold Medal (1997), and the AIA Gold Medal (2002), still sitting at his desk in Osaka with a pencil and a sheet of paper, believing that architecture begins in the tremor of a hand.

The Architecture of Conviction

What draws me to Tadao Ando, beyond the beauty of his buildings, beyond the mastery of his concrete, is something that resonates deeply with everything I explore through Celinescape: the idea that style is not surface. It is structure. It is the visible expression of an inner conviction so complete that it shapes everything it touches.

Ando built his entire career without a diploma, without a movement, without a manifesto written by others. He is his own school. His style, if we can even call it that, is not something he adopted. It is something he became, through decades of discipline, solitude, travel, and an almost monastic devotion to a few essential materials: concrete, light, water, wind.

In a world that worships novelty, Ando returns, again and again, to the same elements, and each time, finds something new within them. This is not repetition. It is depth. It is the difference between someone who collects styles and someone who inhabits one.

Standing inside that concrete cylinder at the Bourse de Commerce, or following the meditation path at Vitra, I felt what I always feel in the presence of true creative conviction: that the space was not just designed. It was meant. Every surface, every shadow, every silence was intentional, not in a controlling way, but in the way a poem is intentional: each word chosen, each pause earned.

Some garments disappear once you put them on. Others never quite let you forget they are there.

The hat belongs to the second category. It sits higher than everything else, frames the face, alters posture almost imperceptibly. It is impossible to wear without consequence. Perhaps that is why it fascinates as much as it intimidates. Unlike a white shirt or a leather jacket, a hat rarely slips quietly into an outfit. It changes the whole equation.

When Style Is Immediate

What has always drawn me to hats is not nostalgia or drama, but their immediacy. A hat does something instantly. It doesn’t wait to be understood. It doesn’t rely on layering or styling tricks. The moment it’s on, something shifts.

You see it with people who have fully integrated it into their way of being: Johnny Depp, Tasya van Ree and the late Diane Keaton. In their case, the hat isn’t a statement or a finishing touch. It’s simply there, like a natural extension of their silhouette. It doesn’t explain itself. It doesn’t ask for permission.

That’s where the difference lies.

Accessory or Disguise

A hat reveals very quickly whether it is assumed or not.

When it’s added at the last minute, used to complete an outfit, or worn with a trace of self-consciousness, it can slip dangerously close to costume. The hat starts to feel separate from the body, like a prop rather than a choice. Instead of adding character, it distracts from it.

You can usually sense it immediately: the constant adjustment, the repeated touch, the awareness of wearing a hat. That awareness is the giveaway. Because when something is truly right, you forget it.

Forgetting the Hat

For me, the most honest relationship with a hat begins with function. Sun, heat, light. Protection.

When a hat has a clear purpose, it settles in naturally. You stop thinking about it. It becomes part of the body’s logic rather than a stylistic decision. And it’s precisely in that moment—when the hat disappears from your consciousness—that style emerges.

Perhaps that’s the real key: to wear a hat, you have to forget it. The moment you remain aware of it sitting on your head, something is off. The hat hasn’t been absorbed yet.

A Shape Loaded with History

Of course, hats carry history. Shapes, codes, references that can’t be erased. The fedora, in particular, comes with a dense visual memory.

My own entry point was Borsalino. Founded in 1857 in Alessandria, the Italian house shaped the modern fedora so decisively that its name became the object itself in parts of the world. Their Bogart model remains a lesson in balance: clean lines, a precise pinch at the crown, elegance without stiffness.

Seeing a Borsalino being made (felt shaped by steam, hands repeating gestures refined over decades) makes one thing clear: this is not an accessory designed to follow trends. It’s an object built to last, to age, to absorb life. No wonder it feels different once it’s on your head.

Those Who Made It Normal

What the images in this series show, whether film stills, portraits or street scenes, is not flamboyance, but normalisation.

Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo walking through Marseille. Diane Keaton in a tailored suit. Tasya van Ree moving through the city. None of them are “wearing a hat” in the theatrical sense. They are simply wearing their hat.

That’s what makes them distinctive. Uniqueness doesn’t come from the object itself, but from the absence of tension around it. The hat doesn’t add personality; it reveals it.

Those Who Rethink the Form

Beyond the classics, a new generation of hat makers is quietly expanding what a hat can be—without breaking its grammar.

One of the labels I return to most often is Nick Fouquet. Born in New York and raised between France and Florida, Fouquet started his brand in a Venice Beach garage in 2013. He didn’t come from traditional millinery, but from patternmaking and design, which perhaps explains the instinctive quality of his work. His hats blend the rebellious spirit of the American West with a certain Parisian restraint. Made by hand from beaver felt, straw or vintage textiles, they are finished with small, almost secret details: a match slipped into the band, a slightly burned brim, edges left imperfect. They feel worn-in from the start—rooted in tradition, yet unmistakably contemporary.

In New York, Rodney Patterson’s Esenshel approaches hats from a more sculptural angle. Founded in 2017, the label plays with height, volume and colour: high crowns, truncated cones, saturated tones like terracotta, cobalt or mustard. These are hats that don’t try to disappear. They change the wearer’s silhouette entirely, turning the head into a focal point. I remember seeing one of his pieces on a stylist at a gallery opening and being unable to look away—not because it was loud, but because it was perfectly resolved. It made her look anchored, almost architectural.

There are, of course, other houses I admire deeply like Maison Michel in Paris, Gigi Burris in New York, Janessa Leone in Los Angeles. What connects them all is a shared respect for craft and time. They understand that a hat isn’t something you replace every season. It’s something that absorbs life: the crease from being packed too tightly in a suitcase, the faint smell of summer heat, the memory of light filtered through its brim.

Not So Basic, After All

In a world of fast styling and visual shortcuts, the hat resists simplification. It doesn’t tolerate hesitation. It asks for alignment, between body, intention and movement.

When it works, it works quietly. It protects, it frames, it settles in. And one day, someone points it out and you realise you hadn’t thought about it all day.

That’s when the hat stops being an accessory.

It becomes something else entirely.

And perhaps that’s what Not So Basic has always been about—not the object itself, but the moment it stops being noticed, because it finally makes sense.

It happened by accident.

I was at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, wandering through the museum shop, when I picked up a small book published by Actes Sud : Harry Gruyaert. I didn’t know the name. The cover caught my eye. I turned the pages and felt that familiar, quiet shock that only comes when you encounter something deeply alive.

The series was Made in Belgium. I smiled — of course. I’ve lived close to Belgium for years, studied in Brussels, and know its skies and streets well. But in Gruyaert’s lens, it was another world entirely. The damp light, the saturated tones, the way he turns ordinary streets into stage sets. There’s a kind of humour and melancholy in it — a tenderness for the banal. It reminded me of Martin Parr, but softer, more painterly.

I bought the book without hesitation. Since then, I’ve been seeing colour differently.

From Antwerp to Everywhere

Harry Gruyaert was born in Antwerp in 1941. He first dreamed of cinema, not photography — and it shows. He studied at the School of Photo and Cinema in Brussels, hoping to tell stories through moving images. But life had another plan. In the late 1960s, a trip to Morocco changed everything. There, under the scorching light, he discovered the language of colour. Kodachrome film became his muse.

At a time when black and white still ruled the world of photojournalism, Gruyaert dared to make colour the story itself. By 1982, he joined Magnum Photos — a rare colourist in a collective built on monochrome humanism. His presence there was almost an act of rebellion: proof that emotion could live in blue, red, and violet just as powerfully as in shades of grey.

Painting with Light

Gruyaert often said he reacts physically to colour. You can sense it in his images — they vibrate. His compositions are meticulous yet instinctive, almost musical. He doesn’t hunt for drama; he waits for harmony, for that fleeting instant when geometry, light, and movement align.

In those moments, he turns the world into a painting. The people who appear in his photographs are not subjects; they are brushstrokes. He once said he isn’t interested in “stories,” but in “what colours do to each other.” And somehow, that’s exactly what makes his work so human.

Made in Belgium — Familiar Yet Foreign

The Made in Belgium series is where I first met his gaze — and where I felt most at home.

A woman standing in front of a butcher’s shop. A man in a raincoat framed by a neon reflection. There’s something both ordinary and surreal in these scenes. Belgium, with its cloudy skies and red-brick melancholy, becomes almost cinematic through his eyes.

For me, these images feel like memories I’ve never lived: the bus stops of Brussels, the seaside of Ostend, the flicker of a café sign at dusk. Gruyaert doesn’t romanticize his country; he transforms it. The result is both humorous and heartbreaking — a portrait of a place caught between grey skies and electric light.

Airports — The Geometry of Departure

Then there’s Airports.

I’ve always found airports strangely poetic — those in-between spaces where no one quite belongs. Gruyaert captures them as no one else does: reflections on glass walls, luggage shadows sliding across polished floors, strangers framed like modern sculptures in transit.

His Last Call series feels like a meditation on modern life — the quiet choreography of waiting. Light becomes architecture; travellers become silhouettes in a composition of chrome and neon. It’s beautiful, lonely, and strangely serene. In his hands, even the act of waiting feels like art.

TV Shots — Screens and Shadows

In the 1970s, long before the digital age, Gruyaert turned his camera toward television screens. He photographed what he saw there — images already filtered, already framed — and somehow gave them new life.

The TV Shots series is hypnotic: faces distorted by static, colours bleeding into one another. It’s both pop and poetic, a reflection on how images consume us. Long before we scrolled endlessly through screens, Gruyaert was already questioning what it means to look, to be a spectator in a world saturated with light.

Morocco — Where It All Began

Morocco was the spark that ignited everything. The warmth of its light, the ochres and blues, the deep reds that seem to hum under the sun — this is where Gruyaert found his voice. He often returned, fascinated by the rhythm of daily life there. The markets, the shadows, the sudden bursts of colour against earthen walls.

In these images, colour is not decoration — it’s emotion. You can almost feel the heat, the dust, the stillness. His Morocco is both vivid and quiet, a place where time expands and every shade has a soul.

Learning to See Again

What I love most about Harry Gruyaert is not just what he photographs, but how he teaches us to look. His work isn’t loud. It doesn’t demand attention. It invites it.

Since discovering him, I’ve caught myself slowing down — noticing the red of a bus against a green hedge, the way violet shadows creep across a white wall at sunset. Gruyaert’s photographs remind me that beauty often hides in the corner of our eye.

He showed us that the everyday can be extraordinary — that the world, in all its chaos, is still full of grace if we take the time to see it.

And maybe that’s what makes his images unforgettable: they don’t just show colour; they make us feel it.

When I was little, my favourite outfit wasn’t a dress or a pair of jeans. It was a pair of striped Scandinavian overalls — slightly too big, the straps crossing clumsily at the back, the knees already fading from adventures. I don’t remember the brand, only the feeling: freedom, movement, a kind of gentle protection. They were my armour and my playground all at once.

Years later, I realise I never really stopped wearing them. The silhouette has evolved — now it’s oversized vintage denim, sometimes a size too big on purpose — but the comfort, the ease, the quiet confidence remain. I wear them almost daily at home, through every season. They make me feel effortlessly me — dressed but unpretentious, grounded yet ready for anything. Overalls, to me, are what other people find in a perfect white shirt or an old leather jacket: familiarity, freedom, and the sense that you can just get on with life.

A humble beginning, a lasting legacy

The story of the overall began far from fashion — somewhere between dust, wood, and labour. In 19th-century Lyon, a tailor named Louis Lafont stitched a bib onto a pair of trousers for his carpenter father, so he could keep his tools close. Across the ocean, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were experimenting with denim, rivets, and practicality. These garments weren’t about aesthetics — they were about endurance. But like all good design stories, function soon found its way to form.

By the time American youth discovered denim as rebellion, the overall had quietly slipped from factory floors to festival fields. The ‘70s made it a statement of liberation; the ‘90s gave it slouchy attitude; and today, it has become something rarer — timeless.

Oversized, undone, and utterly free

There’s a kind of poetry in drowning a little in your clothes. Oversized overalls carry a laid-back energy that I adore. They feel both nostalgic and modern — a soft echo of Gwen Stefani’s ‘90s swagger mixed with the ease of contemporary street style.

I like to wear mine with a cashmere sweater in winter, boots sturdy enough to walk anywhere. The volume speaks for itself; it doesn’t ask for perfection. A hat, a necklace, or nothing at all — that’s the beauty of it. In a world obsessed with “put-together,” the overall whispers something different: that confidence can be comfortable, and style can be quiet.

Tailored, feminine, and unexpectedly elegant

Then there’s the fitted version — the one that nods to the ‘70s and flirts with the idea of glamour. Think Alexa Chung in dark denim, Sienna Miller layered over a turtleneck, Winona Ryder in her nonchalant way. The lines are softer, the waist defined, the silhouette more refined — a piece that says, I’m wearing overalls, but I could walk into a meeting or a gallery opening just like this.

It’s that duality I love: practical yet poised, playful yet structured. Because overalls, at their core, are about freedom — not choosing between comfort and elegance, but finding your balance in both.

Reimagined by the avant-garde

Few garments have travelled as far creatively. Japanese designers like Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto treat overalls as blank canvases — reshaping them in wool, linen, even technical fabrics; detaching bibs, exaggerating straps, layering asymmetries. Each version feels like a conversation between discipline and abandon.

Meanwhile, brands like Visvim, Kapital and Needles reinvent them through craft — boro patchwork, sashiko stitching, hand-dyed indigo — transforming workwear into wearable art. On runways from Acne Studios to Longchamp, from Tibi to Isabel Marant, the overall keeps returning, stubbornly relevant, always reinvented.

It’s as if designers can’t resist its honesty. It’s a garment without pretence — and in fashion, that’s almost radical.

Why I’ll never call them basic

I think the reason I love overalls so deeply is that they refuse to choose sides. They’re functional but emotional, nostalgic but forward-looking, ordinary yet quietly subversive. They free you from matching, from trying too hard. They move with you, not against you.

Every time I slip into mine, I feel a small echo of that childhood version of myself — carefree, curious, completely at ease. Maybe that’s why I still reach for them, even after decades spent thinking about style and identity.

Because if style is about expressing who you are, then overalls are my truest expression: uncomplicated, enduring, a little oversized, and not so basic after all.

Since my adolescence, architecture has moved me profoundly. There's something deeply emotional about structures crafted not merely to shelter, but to speak—to assert a vision, provoke thought, and stir feelings. Architects like Jean Nouvel, Tadao Ando, and Zaha Hadid first ignited this passion, their bold forms and innovative visions teaching me the profound emotional power architecture holds.

But recently, another figure has captured my imagination: Rudy Ricciotti. An architect whose buildings are more than structures—they are statements, confrontations, and acts of courage.

Rudy Ricciotti: A Personal and Powerful Story

Ricciotti’s personal story resonates as strongly as his architecture. Born in Kouba, Algeria, in 1952, to a modest Italian family, his formative experiences were deeply tied to his father—a self-taught mason whose craftsmanship instilled in him a profound respect for concrete and construction. Growing up in Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, in the isolated landscapes of Camargue, Ricciotti learned independence and resilience. Coupled with rigorous education in engineering and architecture, these experiences shaped a creator unafraid to combine technical precision with emotional expression.

His philosophy is clear: architecture isn’t about pleasing everyone. It’s about staying true to one's creative vision, accepting controversy as an inevitable companion. Ricciotti proves that when you abandon compromise, you embrace genuine innovation and lasting emotional resonance.

Bold Statements in Concrete and Courage

We all know Marseille’s MuCEM—a poetic yet powerful structure that embodies Ricciotti’s uncompromising vision. But his courageous approach extends far beyond this iconic museum.

Take the École Internationale in Manosque, the Parc des Expositions in Chartres, or the Salle des Musiques Actuelles in Aix-en-Provence—each of these works is unapologetic, fully embodying Ricciotti’s unwavering belief that architecture demands boldness and audacity.

I think the first images I saw were her fashion editorials for Yohji Yamamoto or Issey Miyake in the '90s. I was too young to fully grasp their impact, but I felt them. That was enough. The grain, the shadow, the muted colors—they weren’t just photographs. They were whispers. Murmurs of another world, fragile and poetic, suspended between dream and disappearance. They felt different from everything else I had seen.

Years later, when I learned that these images were hers, the recognition was immediate. That soft melancholy, the tampered light, the sense of a fleeting moment held just long enough to break your heart—that was Sarah Moon.

When I read that she had just received the 2025 Grand Prix de l’Académie des beaux-arts in photography, it was like a window opened into the past. The emotion returned, intact. As if her images had never left me. So I dove back in—into her life, her work, her unique way of seeing the world.

Born in 1941 as Marielle Warin, Sarah Moon’s life began in a time of uncertainty and exile. Her Jewish family fled occupied France during World War II, finding refuge in England. That experience—of exile, fragility, and the shadows of history—has left an invisible thread through all her work.

In the 1960s, she became a fashion model under the name Marielle Hadengue. But posing in front of the lens was just the prelude. What she really wanted was to step behind it—to shape the image, not just be captured by it. By 1970, she left modeling to become a self-taught photographer.

Her early success was meteoric. Her campaigns for Cacharel and editorials for Chanel and Dior in the 1970s offered a new kind of femininity—soft, ambiguous, ghostly. Nothing about her women felt staged or perfected. They seemed like they were about to disappear. Sarah Moon created images “between light and shadow,” suspended in a kind of beautiful doubt.

But her artistic turn came in the mid-1980s, following the sudden death of her assistant, Mike Yavel. Shaken, she shifted away from commissioned work and into something far more introspective. “I started to photograph what I saw when no one asked me for anything,” she once said. Her camera no longer captured fashion—it captured absence, memory, loss, and the stories we can’t quite tell.

Tim Walker, Deborah Turbeville, even new voices like Harley Weir—all share, in some way, her sensibility: the courage to distort, to blur, to whisper rather than shout. They too chase after the fleeting, the flawed, the poetic.

When I think of Sarah Moon, I think of Paris. Not the postcard city, but the one I used to visit as a teenager, with my parents, on weekends. We would go see my uncle— someone I cared for deeply, whose presence I still miss, and who left us far too young. Those trips were my first real encounter with art, fashion, exhibitions, photography.

I can’t name the exact moment, but in my memory, Sarah Moon’s photographs live somewhere in that Paris. Maybe in a museum bookshop. Or in a magazine at a kiosk near Saint-Germain. Maybe it was a poster on a gallery wall. But I remember the feeling. The stillness. The sense of time slowing down, of being wrapped in something fragile and melancholic.

Even now, flipping through the photobooks on my shelf, coming back to her work feels like returning to that moment. Like opening a window to a dream. Her images still speak to me, not with clarity, but with feeling.

I recently returned from a visit to the Vitra Design Museum and Fondation Beyeler and found myself completely energized by the burst of creativity I encountered—from Tadao Ando and Zaha Hadid to Jean Prouvé and Ettore Sottsass. Each of these brilliant minds, many sadly no longer with us, shattered boundaries to fully realize their artistic visions, be it through architecture or design. Today, I’m dedicating this piece to Ettore Sottsass.

Why Sottsass?

Because his work connects deeply with my own life story, particularly through the iconic Valentine typewriter he designed for Olivetti in 1969. My father began his career at Olivetti, and his passion for architecture and design had a profound influence on me from an early age. My mother’s Italian roots have increasingly resonated with me as I grow older, and Italy, for me, is the true cradle of design. My parents, with their youthful and modest means, surrounded themselves with objects imbued with meaning—from Philippe Starck’s iconic lemon squeezer to an Eames chair, and notably, a champagne bucket designed by Ettore Sottsass. These were not merely functional objects but pieces that brought something more, an aesthetic and thoughtful presence, into daily life.

A Polymath of Design

Ettore Sottsass was born in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1917 to an Austrian mother and an Italian father who was himself an architect. Sottsass was a polymath: painter, architect, industrial designer, jewelry designer (pieces often crafted lovingly for his wife), and ceramicist. His multidisciplinary approach deeply resonates with me.

Sottsass’s work, recognizable by its bold originality, demands a certain maturity to fully appreciate. His "Carlton" bookcase, which I glimpsed in a video of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s apartment and notably also featured in Karl Lagerfeld’s fully Memphis-styled Monaco apartment, exemplifies his irreverent, unorthodox spirit. The Memphis Group, co-founded by Sottsass in the early 1980s, was an influential design collective known for its vibrant colors, exaggerated geometric shapes, and playful approach that challenged the minimalism and functionalism dominant at the time. With its playful anthropomorphic form, the Carlton bookcase challenged conventional functionalism by also serving as a room divider, revolutionizing domestic logic.

A Designer Without Limits

Sottsass admired artists such as Picasso and was always vocal about the artistic influences that enriched his vision. He was a true pioneer in designer-brand collaborations, partnering notably with Olivetti and Alessi, decades ahead of his time. Sottsass often referred to his creations as "small architectures," blurring the lines between industrial design and architectural philosophy.

What deeply moves me about Sottsass’s universe is his relentless freedom of exploration. Without self-imposed barriers, he confidently navigated through diverse disciplines, always with conviction and clear intention. His creations, whether they be ceramics or elaborate jewelry, mirrored a profound understanding of materials and aesthetics.

Breaking Rules in Technicolor

What I especially admire about Sottsass is how authentically he broke the rules, reflecting his personality and creative journey. With Memphis Group, he fundamentally challenged the functionalist principles dominating design, employing extravagant forms and bold colors that went entirely against minimalist trends. The Carlton bookcase perfectly embodies this provocative attitude, challenging accepted norms and embracing a playful irreverence.

He questioned traditional boundaries between disciplines, blending architecture, ceramics, jewelry, and industrial design into a radical, unconventional practice. Sottsass saw design as a dialogue with life itself, far from the predictable, standardized products typical of the industry. His collaborations with iconic brands like Olivetti and Alessi disrupted the status quo, proving design could be simultaneously functional, expressive, and meaningful.

Sottsass wrote, "Doing design doesn’t mean giving shape to a more or less silly product for a more or less luxurious industry. For me, design is a way of discussing life." This perspective perfectly encapsulates his creative ethos—bold, free, and ever questioning.

Reflecting on Ettore Sottsass’s life and creations, I am inspired not just by his aesthetic courage but also by his insistence on living and designing authentically. In embracing objects that mean something to us, we echo Sottsass’s core belief—that good design isn’t merely about function or beauty, but about sparking meaningful dialogues with life itself.

Vanessa Paradis had it. So did Madonna. In the 90s, their Perfectos weren’t just jackets—they were declarations. Vanessa, tousled hair and Levi’s 501s, in that sultry whisper of a music video; Madonna, electrifying in that Desperately Seeking Susan era, when the Perfecto was practically her second skin, leather thrown over lace and layered attitude. And Michael Jackson? That red masterpiece in Beat It was practically stitched into my subconscious. I didn’t just admire them—I wanted to be them. Not famous. Just... effortlessly cool.

I remember it vividly: a grey Sunday at the Puces de Saint-Ouen with my parents, sometime in the late '80s. I was 15 and on a mission. Not for records or posters, but for a leather jacket that could carry the weight of my teenage dreams. That could turn up the volume on who I was—quiet, observant, a little invisible—and help me step into a version of myself I hadn’t quite grown into yet. That jacket, I believed, would say everything I didn’t know how to say out loud.

A Jacket with a Past Life

Before it became a style totem, the leather jacket was all function. A Second Skin for pilots in World War I, then recut and standardized by the U.S. Army Air Force in the 1930s. The A-2 flight jacket. The B-3 Bombardier. These weren’t fashion pieces—they were survival gear, protecting bodies from wind, cold, and altitude.

Then Hollywood happened. Marlon Brando in The Wild One. James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. These men didn’t just wear jackets—they wore angst, masculinity, vulnerability. Leather became the uniform of those who didn’t quite fit in. And suddenly, a military relic became a vessel for identity, rebellion, and everything in between.

Leather as Language

By the late 50s, leather had already crossed the Atlantic and anchored itself in the shoulders of French youth: the blousons noirs. In the US, it danced with rock 'n' roll. Onstage, Elvis and Gene Vincent looked like gods in leather. By the 70s and 80s, it had fully morphed into a cultural symbol—equal parts punk, pop, and power.

The jacket became political. Personal. Madonna rewrote its script with a whip-smart femininity. The punk movement tore it up and remade it. And in my own mythology? Kelly McGillis in Top Gun (the real reason I ever noticed bomber jackets), Winona Ryder in anything, Demi Moore with her cropped, brooding beauty. Gwyneth and Brad. Kate and Johnny. Those couples didn’t just wear jackets. They inhabited them.

Design, Disrupted

Leather eventually made its way to the front row. Yves Saint Laurent was the first to bring it to haute couture, with his crocodile leather blouson Chicago—bold, black, unapologetic. Claude Montana followed in the 80s with sculpted shoulders and power lines. More recently, Khaite has brought leather into a quieter revolution: minimalism with edge, luxury that doesn’t scream but hums.

I love what Khaite does with leather. It’s sculptural and emotional all at once—like memory pressed into fabric. Their pieces feel lived in, even when brand new. Saint Laurent, especially in its Spring/Summer 2025 collection, continues to walk that delicious line between the masculine and the sensual, the sharp and the fluid.

My Own Leather Story

I only own one leather jacket. A fitted Perfecto by Acne Studios. It’s not oversized or on-trend. It’s nostalgic. Tactile. Intentional. I waited to find the one—a piece that would hold all the echoes of the images that shaped me. The 80s and 90s weren’t just about fashion; they were about figuring yourself out through what you wore.

Before buying into a more experimental cut, I needed that one. The one that said: “I remember who I wanted to be.” And I still do.

Of course, I’ve been eyeing the new wave. Leather jackets with a future-facing silhouette. Courrèges does it with clean minimalism. Christopher Esber sculpts the unexpected. Rick Owens redefines drama. Sacai plays with fusion. Lemaire leans into quiet strength. Khaite (again) makes you feel. Simone Rocha adds poetry. Tibi, Y3, Junya Watanabe—all remixing the past with the language of now.

The Second Skin That Never Leaves You

A leather jacket is never neutral. It absorbs your stories. It remembers the bus rides, the concerts, the breakups, the days you felt invincible, and the ones you didn’t. It stretches with you, creases in the places your life bends.

It’s not just about being cool—it’s about protection, transformation, reinvention. Sometimes it’s armor. Sometimes it’s home.

So no, it’s not basic. And for me, it never was.

And maybe that’s the whole point of this series. To remind us that the things we call "basic" are often anything but. They’re essential. They’re loaded. They’re personal. And when worn with intention, they become part of us.

Her relationship with the land wasn’t just personal—it was creative. The region’s curves and contrasts appeared in her work. Her Scorpion designs are a direct result of the natural world that surrounded her.

A Legacy That Still Shines

Elsa Peretti passed away in 2021, but her legacy only grows. In 2025, Tiffany is celebrating the 50th anniversary of their collaboration—an extraordinary milestone. Museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum now showcase her pieces not just as adornment, but as art.

Her work—whether it’s the Open Heart, the Bean, or the Bone Cuff—continues to inspire not just designers, but anyone navigating the intersection of individuality and beauty. She taught us that style isn’t about status. It’s about soul.

Though they have very different design approaches, both brands carry a distinctive Japanese sensibility—pushing boundaries while respecting heritage, embracing innovation while maintaining an intimate connection to their craft.

CFCL: Knitting the Future of Fashion

CFCL was founded by Yusuke Takahashi in 2020, a designer who honed his craft at Issey Miyake before setting out to create a brand rooted in technology and sustainability. What makes CFCL so fascinating is its commitment to 3D computer-programmed knitting, a revolutionary technique that minimizes waste and maximizes efficiency. This method allows garments to be knitted in a single seamless piece, eliminating the fabric scraps that are common in traditional fashion production.

The aesthetic of CFCL is clean, structured, and modern, yet the clothing remains deeply wearable. There’s an effortless elegance to the brand’s silhouettes—voluminous yet lightweight, sculptural yet soft. Each collection builds on the last, reinforcing Takahashi’s vision of a wardrobe designed for the rhythm of contemporary life: pieces that are functional, easy to care for, and adaptable from day to night.

For the Autumn/Winter 2025 collection, CFCL explored the concept of movement through bold, undulating lines and rhythmic patterns. Mame Kurogouchi: The Poetry of Tradition

Founded by Maiko Kurogouchi, Mame Kurogouchi is a brand that feels deeply personal, almost autobiographical. Her collections are infused with stories from her past, Japanese cultural heritage, and a reverence for craftsmanship. Before launching her own label, Kurogouchi worked under Issey Miyake, where she refined her technical skills while developing a uniquely poetic design language.

Her approach is intuitive and emotional—each collection begins with a deep exploration of materials and traditional techniques, from intricate textiles to delicate embroidery.
